Guitarist Duane Andrews, 2006 ECMA Instrumental Artist Of The Year, brings his “Gypsy jazz meets Newfoundland trad” style to Ontario this week with stops July 21-23 at The Canadian Guitar Festival in Odessa (near Kingston), and on Monday, July 24 at The Rex, 194 Queen St. W, Toronto, where he’ll do a CD release showcase for his brand new sophomore disc, “Crocus”.

Born and based in Newfoundland, Duane Andrews plays a Django Reinhardt inspired mélange of jazz, folk and original music. His self-titled debut disc garnered East Coast Music Awards for Instrumental Recording Of The Year (’06) and Jazz Recording Of The Year (’05), three nominations for Canadian Folk Music Awards (’05), four nominations and the award for Instrumental Artist Of The Year (’04) from MusicNL, and the Emerging Artist Award honouring “new and undisputed talent”, from the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council.

A staple on the Canadian east coast music scene for over a decade, Andrews has worked with a variety of musicians including Canadian jazz legends such as Mike Murley and Doug Riley, folk icon Ken Whiteley, Afro-Newfoundland group Mopaya, Irish fiddle master Seamus Creagh and The Chieftains, among others.

A multi-faceted artist, Duane Andrews composed the film score for Hospital City, a feature length CBC/NFB TV documentary; created the theme music for Political Theatre, a CBC TV series, composed the musical score for the national CBC TV pilot “Rabbittown”, produced two award-winning albums Motion Potion and Traces, for Newfoundland fiddle prodigy, Danette Eddy and switched hats once again to produce a feature length documentary film, Water Street about the contemporary music scene in St. John's Newfoundland. devised his own tribute to Mozart with a CBC commissioned arrangement of a movement from the String Quintet in G minor. Arranged for his gypsy jazz quartette, the piece was created in honour of Mozart’s 250th birthday, recorded at the CBC studios in St. John’s, NL and subsequently aired on numerous national and regional CBC radio programs.

Duane Andrews has been a featured performer at many festivals and special events including the Halifax International Celtic Feis, Montreal International Jazz Festival, Atlantic Jazz Festival, London Ontario's Sunfest, St. John's Jazz Festival, Evolve Festival, Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, Rendezvous Folk, Atlantic Film Festival, North American Folk Alliance, SXSW, 2006 JunoFest, and most recently at the Rochester International Jazz Festival (NY).
