Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains Passes Away

ASPaddyMoloneyPromoPhoto.jpgPaddy Moloney of the World Famous Band, The Chieftains passed away on October 11, 2021 in Ireland.

He was born in Donnycarney, North of Dublin. He began play tin whistle at age 6 and the uilleann pipe at age 8.

Paddy was a multi-instrumentalist and composer. He co-founded the legendary Irish Group in 1962 with Michael Tubridy and Sean Pitts and have been performing all over the world ever since (58 years).

Michael and Sean left the group in 1979 and additional members were added throughout the years.

The group have been nominated for 18 Grammy Awards and won 6 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 for the BBC Folk Award.

The original group consisted of Paddy Moloney (uilleann pipe and flute), Sean Pitts (tin whistle), Martin Fay (fiddle), David Fallon (bodram) and Mick Tubridy (flute).

They were the first band invited to perform on the Great Wall of China in 1983.

The band collaborated with such music artists as Sting, Willie Nelson, Marianne Faithful, Tom Jones, The Rolling Stones , Emmylou Harris, PEI Fiddler Richard Wood, Natalie MacMaster, The Ennis Sisters, The Rankin Family, Luciano Pavarotti and many others.

Paddy scored and composed work in a wide variety of TV and films.

The groups last album was in 2013 entitled, Voice of Ages.

Their last show was in Philadelphia on St Patrick's Day in March 2020, before the pandemic forced them to cancel the remainder of their Irish Good Bye Tour.

Paddy's legacy will remain with us in the music which he created and brought to the world. His music was a source of celebration and pride for all of us.ASChieftainsOct20211.jpg
