Johnny who was at the peak of his career when he was involved in a terrible automobile traffic accident colliding with a truck head on. Johnny passed away on the way to hospital. He had 2 passengers with him, Tommy Tomlinson and Tillman Franks. Tommy was seriously hurt and had his leg ampulated. He passed away in 1982.
Tillman suffered head injuries and passed away in 2006.
The driver, James Evan Davis age 19 of the truck survived with a broken ankle and other injuries. He was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

These songs can be heard even today on various radio stations.
Johnny after divorcing his first wife Donna Cook, he married Billie Jean Jones widow of (Hank Williams) and had 2 daughters.
Johnny won a 1960 Grammy for the song, Battle of new Orleans for best country song and the song entered the Grammy Hall of Fame.
He is buried at the Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Hughton, Louisiana.
