Professional Fiddler, music director, music writer and entertainer, DON MESSER would of been 100 years old, today May 9/09. He was born in Tweedside, (near Fredericton) New Brunswick on May 9, 1909. He passed away on March 26, 1973. At age 7 years old, he was playing fiddle for square dances. His first band was formed in 1934 called The New Brunswick Lumberjacks. He began touring the Maritimes, New York and Maine. He was based in Charlottetown for 27 years.

In the 1930's he played the Kerosene Lamp Circuit and performed at kitchen parties and barn dances and hundreds of shows. In the sixties, his TV show, Don Messer's Jubilee was a major hit on CBC TV, seen by 4 million people weekly and was second in ratings after Hockey Night in Canada. The show was cancelled in 1969, following by major protests across Canada to no avail. The televised show was picked up by Hamilton TV, but shortly after, Charlie passed away and the show never recovered. While Don was preparing for his fourth season show, a year later, he died of a heart attack at age of 63.

He left a musical legacy which is still with us today.
