By John Gavin, Saturday, March 6, 2021

ASStompinTompictureJune2002byJonathanHaywardattideauHall.jpgStompin' Tom was the most successful country music artist in Canadian History.

He was a country/folk and songwriter. He was born in Saint John, NB and was left as an orphan. He was put up for adoption and was adopted by a Skinner's Pond PEI couple. He stayed only for 4 years and left the Island. He worked at odd jobs in Saint John as he wandered from town to town and worked on fishing boats, a grave digger, a tobacco picker and a fry cook.

He bought his first guitar at age 14 and began writing songs. He then decided to hitch hike across Canada . He stopped in Timmins Ontario and the rest is history. His style of singing and stomping his foot caught on and he ended up performing at The Maple Leaf Tavern for weeks on end. In the meantime he was an instant hit at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto.

Stompin' Tom wrote more than 300 songs with 48 albums and sold over 4 million copies.

Three of his best written songs were: Sudbury Saturday Night - Bud The Spud - The Hockey Song.

Songs like Canada Day-Up Canada Day-The Hockey Song-Bud The Spud and Sudbury Saturday Night have become to be regarded as National Anthems.

The Hockey song was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Tom was named an officer of the Order of Canada and received an honorary doctor of law degree from the University of Toronto in 2000.

He won a number of Juno's and returned them all as radio stations wouldn't play his music in Canada or USA.

A Stompin' Tom Award was created by ECMA and presented to an outstanding music artist in each Maritime Province every Year since its inception.

Tom also wrote books about his 4 decade career.

His funeral was attended by thousands and fans will always remember his incredible career.
